PC's are cheap. I bought my rig about a year and a half ago. For £600. And to this day it plays ANYTHING I throw at it maxed out with ease. With PC's games have mods, they can be fixed easier, you can have other software such as skype, torrents, steam, MSN etc. You can listen to music aswell as play games, you can record direct to your HDD, you can run multiple monitors along with all programs and blah blah blah list is endless.
£600 is fuck all. Work in a Factory for a month and you can buy 2 of them and have money left over. Work where I am you make £1400 a month. Wait another 3 months, and I'll be hitting just under 1800 a month. And the work is simple, get a job and a PC will last a lot longer than consoles, and cost you far less in the long run.
Xbox 360 and PS3 are timebombs waiting to go off, One charges you just to fucking play online. The other requires ridiclous load times and install's. Sure you install on a PC, but compared to a PS3 Slim.....PC install time was fantastic, consoles are a lower brow PC. They have the exact same components. And your idea of Ram. I can buy 8GB of ram for just under £40 16 for around £60. What's your point. Again my job, I can buy 38GB in just under 2 hours of work..... Hardly a severe downfall to be honest. And at our age, living at home with mummy or daddy. All you gotta pay for is Rent if that. Or maybe a few other things. You get what you work for. If you can't be fucked to find something or work for something then yes it's going to be a bitch to get that stuff.
Simple fact is, without PC's you would not have consoles. A decent rig can cost less than £500 Mine right now is worth just under £300 as it stands. Besides you don't need all the new stuff unless doing things like 3D Rendering, otherwise Eight Cores and 16GB ram are worthless. Gaming rigs, need no more than a Quad Core, with 8GB, and a decent 1-2GB GPU, all can be bought for cheap as chips.
So what's your point?
